Worship

When you look back on 2008, did everything go as planned? Or...were there a few surprises along the way?

I would suspect more people would say "yes" to the second question than to the first.

We can plan and project, but when all is said and done, outcomes are not always what we expect or desire.

Join us for worship as we bring one year to a close and begin another.

Worship

When we speak of hope, we usually make it sound like a doubtful wish..."I hope I will get better."

However, the Christian understanding of hope is quite different. This Christmas season gives us a great opportunity to change our view.

Join us for worship as we explore how our hope can go from wishing to believing.

Worship

Biblical commentator Glenn Barker writes, "...love can be given to God only when it has first been received from God. It exists only as response to his initial love for us."

Scripture tells us it is not that "we loved God", but that "he loved us."

In addition, by sending Christ into the world, God has defined for us what true love requires...the commitment to sacrifice one's most beloved possession for another's gain.

The sobering part of all this is that Scripture says, "Since God has so loved us, we also ought to..."

Worship with us, Sunday, as we explore the rest of that sentence.

What's Goin on with this Economy?

Rev. David Bennett
Director of Mission & Development
Growing Healthy Churches

Today, we see stock market declines of over 40% from their highs. Many have experienced similar losses in their retirement accounts. Others are losing their jobs. Some are losing their homes. In fact, 15% of the homes for sale in Sacramento are bank owned according to area realtors. Companies are going bankrupt. The government has approved over $700 billion of bailouts for businesses and individuals. Time magazine recently featured on the cover a picture of the soup lines from the time of the Great Depression. Politicians and newscasters have compared our current economy to the Great Depression or at least the worst economy since that time.

With all the bad news, how can churches respond? What can individuals do in light of this economy? What are the smartest money moves? How can we help our church members?

When I was a child, I had no problem believing just about anything about Christmas.

I imagine part of that was just being a child. However, I think there was another reason. Unfortunately, I can't quite put my finger on it.

What I do know, however, is somewhere along the line I lost it and I want it back. Maybe I'm not alone.

Join us in worship, these weeks leading up to Christmas. Maybe we can rediscover whatever it is, together.

Jesus said, " So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?" The Apostle Paul said, "give thanks in all circumstances."

That is easier said than done. When you look at the stock market, the troubles in our financial institutions, or the nation's auto industry woes, it is difficult not to worry. All of these things affect all of us in some way.

What should we be doing in the midst of all these things? Celebrating, of course.

Worship with us, Sunday, and find out how that is possible.

It just isn't right!

A guy who works for an hour in a vineyard gets paid the same wage as a man who has worked 12 hours in that same vineyard in the hot sun.

Indeed, if you analyze this story in light of worldly logic and values...it isn't right.

However, the way Jesus tells the story, it is right.

Worship with us, Sunday, and find out why.

Worship

As Paul closes his letter to the Romans, he takes time to acknowledge some people for whom he is thankful. Some of the people on the list we recognize. Others we do not.

It is not important, however, that we know all the details about these people.

The important thing about the list is Paul showing his deep sense of gratitude for the many ways their lives have impacted him personally.

Worship with us, Sunday, as we explore the importance of being a "list maker."

2008 Presidential Election

Note: The following post is in no way meant to be a political statement. Rather, I thought it offered a good Christian perspective on the election...regardless of which candidate you supported. It was posted on RELEVANT's website.

"America Chooses Obama"

by Roxanne Wieman

Well, here we are on the other side. A watershed moment. An historic election. And we, the American people, have made our choice.

Barack Obama will be the 44th President of the United States, and the nation’s first black president. And in elections across the country, Democrats won their seats in the Senate. When Obama takes office in January, he will do so with a Democratic majority in both houses of Congress.

“The American people have spoken, and spoken clearly,” McCain told his supporters in Arizona after the results came in.But what about you?

Those of you who took our RELEVANT poll yesterday favored McCain: 47 percent of you voted for the Arizona Senator and 33 percent of you for Obama. So, are you disappointed? Will you hang your heads today? Do you fear for our nation’s future? I’m not so sure.

So many of us—members of the widely contested “young evangelical voters”—were divided about this election. Not just as a group, but even in our own hearts. I know which candidate I chose, but it wasn’t an easy decision. And, to be honest, I didn’t really care who won. I agreed with both. I disagreed with both.

What I’m wondering now is where do we go from here?

Do you know the story of Jesus and the lepers? It's pretty simple...10 lepers are healed...only one comes back to express his gratitude.

Jesus asks, "Where are the other nine?"

Normal question, but Jesus' questions were generally not asked because he needed to know an answer. Most of the time, they were asked for the benefit of the one to whom he asked the question. In other words, Jesus had some key truth he wanted them to understand.

Worship with us, Sunday, as we find out what this particular key truth has to say to us.

IF you have gotten anything out of being a follower of Christ and obeying his commands.

IF his love has made such a difference in your life that it has prompted you to stop being divisive and to join hands in common action.

IF being in a fellowship produced and guided by the Holy Spirit has caused you to become partners with Christ and his followers.

IF you have a heart and care about others.

Letter of Thanks

following are unedited excerpts from a letter thanking us for the money raised for Haiti food and hurricane relief...

Thank you very much . Please share my thanks with Rev David , his daughter Emily and her boyfriend Jarrod , and the college students for having raised 3000 dollars from the HUGE yard sale of donated items . God bless you all .

Once more grateful thanks . This time the whole amount will go to the orphanage. We have had a meeting last weekend with the Claudin and one of the cooks , the request was that I almost triple the money that I use to give for meat , milk , bread , orange etc . Food supplies are available but still very high . This money comes in due time to help us solve this month problems . I do not know what to say to express what that donation means to me , to the orphanage , to the orphans , and to the whole church .

May God keep blessing you all .

Yours faithfully ,
Andre

Worship

During September, we asked the question, "got purpose?" The answer is, "yes." The Bible tells us, "For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." (Ephesians 2:10)

This month, it is time to take the next step. The path to faith and spiritual maturity can be a long one with many tiny steps or sometimes big leaps.

Yet, every journey begins with a single step. Join us, for worship, and find your next step in your journey, your relationships, your service, and your giving.

God can use you!

The next time you feel like GOD can't use you, just remember...

Noah was a drunk
Abraham was too old
Isaac was a daydreamer J
acob was a liar
Leah was ugly
Joseph was abused
Moses had a stuttering problem
Gideon was afraid
Samson had long hair and was a womanizer
Rahab was a prostitute
Jeremiah and Timothy were too young
David had an affair and was a murderer
Elijah was suicidal
Isaiah preached naked
Jonah ran from God
Naomi was a widow
Job went bankrupt
Peter denied Christ
The Disciples fell asleep while praying
Martha worried about everything
The Samaritan woman was divorced, more than once
Zacchaeus was too small
Paul was too religious
Timothy had an ulcer... AND
Lazarus was dead!

Now, no more excuses! God can use you to your full potential...Besides you aren't the message, you are just the messenger.

Has our purpose as Christians been reduced to just knowing all the stories about Jesus without them having any practical application for our lives?

Has Jesus, himself, been reduced to someone we just admire, rather than an example for us to follow?

Ponder these questions as we prepare to examine them, honestly, this Sunday.

Haiti

The following article appeared at www.crosswalk.com Thanks to your generous offering, this past Sunday, help is on the way from CBC.

Haiti: Some Still Unreached after Ike

OneNewsNow reports that many Haitians have been fending for themselves since Ike struck more than a week ago, struggling without airborne assistantce. Many low-lying areas were already flooded from previous tropical storms, and Ike exacerbated conditions to life-threatening levels.

Mission Aviation Fellowship reports that some landing trips are under water. Will White, a pilot with MAF, said, "What little infrastructure in the roads that were here [such as] bridges are now washed out....they were bad roads to start with and now they're just destroyed," he shares. "The government is very limited in what they can do. Right now the relief effort is from the international community."

Creating Culture

Creating Culture

Our best response to the world is to make something of it.

By Andy Crouch
Christianity Today

Our posture is our learned but unconscious default position, our natural stance. It is the position our body assumes when we aren't paying attention, the basic attitude we carry through life. Often it's difficult for us to discern our own posture—as an awkward, gangly teenager I subconsciously slumped to minimize my height, something I would never have noticed if my mother hadn't pointed it out. Only by a fair amount of conscious effort did my posture become less self-effacing and more confident. Click to continue.

Haiti: Hurricane Season Slams Ministries

Mission News Network reports that Haiti had no time to recover from Hurricane Gustav before Hurricane Hanna struck on Tuesday, again causing massive flooding. Floods and mudslides from the storms have killed more than 100 people. Eva DeHart of For Haiti With Love told MNN that families are desperate for food, even standing outside the ministry's gates during Hanna's fury. Haiti was already enduring a food crisis before the storms hit, and the active hurricane season threatens to worsen the situation, as blocked roads inhibit food distribution. DeHart said, "Gonaives is totally flooded, and areas of Cap Haitien are starting to flood. Nobody is allowed out on the streets. It was food distribution day, but nobody is allowed out on the streets."

from Pastor Andre in Ft. Liberte (unedited)

Dear friends ,
Now it is Hanna's turn . It is destroying houses and killing people . In Gonaives , my native town , the situation is very very bad . In some areas of that city , water has` reached 4 meters and people are obliged to leave their rooms to reach the roof in spite of the rain .
I do not know if Ike , Josephine and Karina will have to hit Haiti after Hanna .
It has rained all night long last night , and today we have learned mayn stories of inundation in the North East . Fort Liberte is still safe , but the food situation cannot be worst . Please keep praying for us .
Your friend , Andre
They are showing right now on NBC 5 that Ike will reach Haiti and rhe D.R this week end.

Comparing the Platforms

Where the parties stand on abortion, faith-based programs, religious liberty, and other issues.

from Christianity Today

It's perhaps telling that the party platform for the Democrats, titled "Renewing America's Promise," begins with a section called, "Renewing the American Dream," addressing the weak economy and how the party proposes to help the poor, the uninsured, the elderly, the unemployed. The Republican platform, meanwhile, opens with a section on national security titled, "Defending Our Nation, Supporting Our Heroes, Securing the Peace," discussing the conflict abroad, Homeland Security, terrorism, and other similar issues.

Probably all of us know someone who has a phobia of some kind or another.

Someone who is afraid of small, enclosed areas -- they're claustrophobic.

Someone who is afraid of wide open, sweeping spaces -- they're agoraphobic.

There are phobias named for fearing heights, depths, snakes, spiders, clowns, dirt, cats, dogs, and just about anything else you can think of.

What about our spiritual phobias? Do they exist and, if so, what are they?

It is with a great deal of excitement that I write to let you know, following our Search Committee’s recommendation, our Church Council has extended a call to Jenny Dailey to serve as a Ministry Consultant for our Children’s Ministry.

Jenny is a native of Ona, West Virginia. She is a graduate of Marshall University and Liberty Theological Seminary. Jenny brings a great deal of excitement and experience to our Children’s Ministry.

Although she will be assisting in other areas, her primary focus will be our new Children’s Ministry…UpStreet. Her commitment to us is to have UpStreet running, this fall, and self-sufficient by January 2009.

Our new children’s area, located in the Monroe Building, was made possible by your generous gifts to the Capital Campaign. Now, with the launching of our new Children’s Ministry, you will see your gifts multiplied in children coming to know and learn about Christ.

Jenny will be introduced to our congregation, August 24.

Messy Means of Deliverance

Back to School and Your Budget

Back to School on a Budget

Tawra Kellam
www.LivingOnADime.com

Back to school is a time when many moms witness their money sprout wings and take flight, finding their homes at retail stores across America. I know that consumer spending is good for the economy, but I don’t take it upon myself to keep the entire US economy propped up, so when my first-grade son announced that he wanted a backpack with rollers, I saw this as a wonderful financial teaching moment. His school is small, and he doesn't walk to or from school. He didn't need rollers.

Big Talker

With exaggerations, we stretch the truth to fit our purposes. With over-commitments, we either lie and say we will accomplish what we cannot accomplish, or we neglect our other God-given priorities in order to make our word good. So both exaggeration and over-commitment are distortions of the truth.

Valerie In Africa

Following are some excerpts from some of Valerie's emails about the work she is doing in Uganda:

5 days a week I'm at the babies' home. I usually work with the kids that are 2-4 months and feed them and play with them and all that fun stuff. Sometimes I hang out with the toddler group. The kids at the home are newborn-about 2 then they go to the villages to live. But there's some special needs kids so they're still at the babies home. One of the kids I've been spending a lot of time with is 3 and his name is Abdul. He was abused a lot by his parents and has a lot of scars all over his body. His parents tried to kill him on a few occasions and the last time they poured acid down his throat. So now he can't take solid food and they're looking into having some sort of surgery to try to repair this. I'll try to post some pictures of him soon. He's an awesome kid. If you look on Watoto's website under the babies home section you can see a picture of him. I've been spending a lot of time with the toddlers the last few days and it's been fun. I'll try to get more pictures up on my blog soon for people to see.

...another thing that I'm doing is going to the Watoto villages 2 days a week with people from Watoto and KPC to talk to students in their schools. We do a life skills program and have talked about things like Godly values and peer pressure. The youth pastor from KPC spoke last week so we got to hang around and talk to students after. It's been fun so far.

One Church?

More than 1,400 Churches Aim for Becoming 'One Church'

from www.crosswalk.com

According to the Christian Post, Life Church pastor Craig Groeschel has launched a month-long series called "One Prayer" in partnership with more than 1,400 churches with more than 800,000 attendees around the world, all sharing sermons via video and a prayer to "make us one."

"I wonder if God ever looks at all of His churches, all the Christian churches all over the world, and asks, 'Why can't you guys come together? Why are you so divided when my Son Jesus prayed 'Father, make them one,'" said Groeschel.

The series was born more out of repentance than a passion for unity, Groeschel explained. It was his desire not to be competitive against other believers and to instead be united. Unity depends on recognizing the real "one enemy" - Satan - and not other churches, he continued.

We have all heard that the past is not something to dwell on, long for, or return to. What, then, is the purpose of our past? It has to be there for a reason.
